there is の全体イメージ
「there is～」は「～はあります」というフレーズです。これは現在形の「be動詞」である「is」と場所を表す副詞「there」を組み合わせたものです。
例えば、「There is a book on the table.」という文章は「テーブルに本がある」という意味になります。
there is とthere areの使い分け
また、「there is」は単数の場合と複数の場合で「is」と「are」を使い分けます。
単数の場合:
- There is a pen in my pocket.
- There is a cat sleeping on the couch.
複数の場合:
- There are two apples in the basket.
- There are several people waiting in line.
there is の肯定文、疑問文、否定文の違い
「there is」は肯定文、疑問文、否定文のいずれの形でも使うことができます。
肯定文:
- There is a restaurant near here.
- There is a great movie playing at the theater.
疑問文:
「there is」を使った文を疑問文にするには、文頭にbe動詞「is」を移動させます。
There is a cake on the table. -> Is there a cake on the table?
複数形の場合、「is」を「are」に変えて同様の方法で作ります。
- Are there any good books you would recommend?
否定文:
「there is」を使った文を否定文にするには、be動詞の後に「not」を加えます。
There is a dog in the park. -> There is not a dog in the park.
複数形の場合、「is」を「are」に変えて同様の方法で作ります。
There are not three books on the shelf.
